cold

Season's greetings to all, and of course Happy Losar!

Perhaps not surprisingly the cold wave affecting much of northern India has plunged temperatures in Ladakh. The chaddar may well be in condition for early January!

Bus accident on Pensi La

Reported in today's Daily Excelsior a bus left the road near the top of the Pensi La killing 11 and injuring 28. The bus was travelling to Kargil from Zanskar when the accident happened on slippery (probably icy) roads. More on the story can be found here.

More details have now also been published here.

Lungnak gets a Post Office

Chief Postmaster General, John Samuel, visited the Kargil area in response to the reported delay of delivering parcels during winter months. During his visit he announced the opening of a new post office in Lungnak, no doubt taking advantage of the ever encroaching road that is slowly pushing up the valley. Complaints from the trade union and shopkeepers highlighted the delay of parcels during the winter season, an indication that despite rapid development in some sectors, Zanskar continues to grind to a halt every winter. More details on the story here.

wild blue sheep fed by hand

This short piece of video was shot last winter, it shows wild blue sheep being fed stale bread from the hand of a monk in Stongde, Zanskar. The quality of the footage is not great, it was shot on a mobile phone, but the subject matter is fascinating.

not much news

Indeed, not much news coming out of Zanskar! I did however receive communication today and the Pensi La is expected to open in 2+ weeks. Apparently the Srinagar - Kargil road opened on the 2nd May. I also received a fascinating video today (shot on a mobile phone) of wild blue sheep being fed by hand last winter. I am just trying to find out more details about who, when and where. I will post the video online shortly once I have chopped the clip to remove the five minutes of footage that document the inside of the cameraman's pocket! Stay tuned...
